The top two teams in the Central Highlands region will compete in the Grand Final of the Cricket Willow Twenty20 Cup on Australia Day 2009. The festivities will kick off with Family Super 6's cricket from 10am-1pm. Families and friends are invited to form a team of 6 players to participate in an exciting new form of cricket played with a ‘softaball’. The Cricket Willow Twenty20 Cup Grand Final will then commence at 2pm.
Participating Associations are asked to nominate the Club representing their Association by no later than Friday 19th December 2008.

Twenty20 cricket has taken Australia by storm and the Cricket Willow Twenty20 Cup provides a great opportunity for the local cricket community to get a taste of the action. As the name suggests, each side bats for an action-packed innings of 20 overs. Other features include ‘free hits’ for front-foot no balls, overs bowled in ‘5 over blocks’ from each end, incoming batsmen having only 90 seconds to face up and a ‘bowl off’ to decide tied or weather interrupted games.

Mt. Clear won the toss and elected to bat after both teams lined up for the National Anthem. Some clean hitting by openers Matt Goonan (38) and Geoff "Joffa" Young (44) got the Mounties off to a flying start, which was carried on by Ash George (46) and Darren Fletcher who top scored with 56, including 3 sixes and 6 fours.
It didn't stop there for the Mounties with Man of the Match Leigh Kentish hitting 46 off only 17 balls (3 sixes and 3 fours). Captain Paull Jeffrey (9 not out) and Steve Nicholson (2 not out) remained unbeaten to finish off the huge total at 5 for 256. Off-spinner Darren Woodward was the pick of the Blackwood bowlers with 3 for 41.
The Blackwood innings got off to the worst possible start with opener Steve O'Brien bowled on the second ball of the innings by a devastating yorker from Leigh Kentish. Two direct hit run outs saw Mt. Clear in a dominant position until Scott Unstead (25) and Allan Salmon (9) showed some resolve in the middle order. With the total on just 72, Lincoln Stephen cleaned up the tail and capped off a resounding victory for Mt. Clear.
It was a showcase day for the Central Highlands region with great weather and a large crowd of spectators enjoying the relaxed atmosphere and the entertaining cricket which the Twenty20 format provides.
Blackwood received their runners-up prize of $400 Jabaroo voucher while the winners Mt. Clear received their Jabaroo voucher to the value of $1,000 from Cricket Willow.

A large crowd celebrated Australia Day 2007 at Shepherds Flat for the grand final of the Cricket Willow Twenty20 Cup between Wendouree and North Castlemaine. Games of Family Super 6’s cricket and a special appearance by the Channel 9 Postcards crew set the scene for an enjoyable day for all in attendance.
North Castlemaine batted first setting a competitive score of 119 on the lush ground. Opener Jamie Allen started well for his side with 37 off 38 balls, with help from Ben Rossin 30 (21 balls) and number 10 Scott Thompson 15 (22 balls). Wendouree bowled and fielded well with Tim Miller starring with figures of 2/16 including two wickets in two balls and a run out in the same over. Older brother Sam Miller also took 2/11.
With the nature of Twenty 20 cricket North Castlemaine needed early wickets to be confident of defending the total. Wendouree star of the quarter and semi finals Sam Miller went early and North Castlemaine appeared to be in with a strong chance. However the game quickly changed when Victoria Country representative Heath Pyke arrived at the crease. Captain Pyke hit 20 off one over and finished with a hard hitting innings of 49 of just 32 balls. Wendouree reached the total comfortably in the 18th over finishing on 4/126. Pyke was the star for Wendouree and was named man of the match by the umpires. Leon Reidy was the best of the North Castlemaine bowlers taking 2/25. He was supported by Ben Rossin who took 1/18.
Wendouree took out the title as the best Twenty20 club in the region and collected the first prize of a $1000 Jabaroo voucher courtesy of Cricket Willow. North Castlemaine were runners up for the second year in a row and received a $400 voucher, again thanks to Cricket Willow.

Games of Family Super 6’s cricket set the scene for an enjoyable day for all in attendance. The action heated up in the afternoon with a competitive tussle between the Mount Clear and North Castlemaine clubs.
In warm conditions, Mount Clear won the toss and elected to bat. The North Castlemaine attack surprised Mount Clear’s top order with 4 early wickets, but experienced duo Paul Jeffrey and Darren Fletcher steadied the innings to set a target of 152.
North Castlemaine’s run chase started with a 93 run opening partnership before Glen Oliver was spectacularly caught and bowled by Ryan McKee. Despite playing with a broken cheekbone, Jamie Allen continued his excellent form to take out man of the match honours. His innings of 83 not out was not quite enough to get North Castlemaine over the line, finishing with a total of 7 / 135 from their 20 overs.
After the game Ian Tinetti congratulated the players and umpires. Mount Clear captain Scott Illingworth accepted the $1,000 prize and said his team thoroughly enjoyed playing in the tournament and were thrilled to be the inaugural winners.
